The ruins were once a customs post and hunting seat, as well as the backdrop for the German Peasant’s war in 1526 and the Tyrolean Rebellion of 1809.

Spring Alpine hike to the Astjoch saddle
Springtime in South Tyrol

This itinerary with its gentle ups and downs will lead you through the vast Rodenecker Lüsner Alm plateau. Starting from the Zumis car park (1,725m), we will follow the Creation Path to the Pianer Kreuz mountain chapel. The path is divided into seven stretches, each with its own themed art installation. From the chapel, we will ascend to the Astjoch summit cross (2,194m) and enjoy a 360° panorama of the surrounding mountains. On the way back, several huts will be open for refreshments.
Total walking time: approx. 5 hours. Distance: 17 km. Elevation gain: 470 metres.

Guided tour to the Hinterwalderhof farm in Meransen

This farm tour is a great opportunity to explore rural life in South Tyrol and learn all about the animals living on the farm. As a highlight, you will have the chance to meet alpacas up close when you visit the stable and the meadow. Suitable for young and old, this experience includes a presentation of wool products and a short tour with the alpacas.

Visit to a mill in operation in Terenten

For a long time it was very difficult to reach Terenten from the valley. For hundreds of years the village people had to look after themselves. The farmers and craftsmen provided food and clothes. Almost every farm had its own mill. However, only few of them are still fully functional. The educational mills path leads along Ternerbach River. During a 1,5 hour hike you walk past 7 renovated corn mills, some of which are up to 500 years old. This is where farmers used to grain corn into fine flour, and sometimes still do. During the summer months one mill is open to the public every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

'From grain to bread' family excursion in Terenten

This excursion is a great opportunity to learn all about the life of mountain farmers. After a one-hour walk to the farm, you can try some freshly baked typical farmer’s bread straight from the old stone oven. The hike will then resume and lead you to the mills’ valley in Terenten, where you can see a collection of ancient grain mills as well as the exciting earth pyramids. You will also get the chance to visit one of the mills that is still in operation. The path is not suitable for prams.
